“扔垃圾”用英语该怎么说呢？throw the rubbish？
可别一不小心就犯了中式英语的错。
throw the rubbish并不是“扔垃圾”的正确表达，throw是抛、投的意思，throw the rubbish的正确含义是“抛垃圾”，这……抛不准就太尴尬了。
外国人说“扔垃圾”，一般会委婉地说成take out the trash或put it in the trash。
garbage, rubbish, trash, waste这四个词都可以表示“垃圾”，那它们有什么区别呢？

garbage与rubbish的区别
“垃圾”在美国、加拿大等美语国家是garbage，在英国是rubbish。
这两个词还可以用来比喻没有价值的东西或事情、瞎话或者是废话。
例如：
She was talking rubbish in the meeting.
她在会上的发言都是废话。
The store is full of useless rubbish.
这个店里卖的全是没有用的破烂。
Dig a pit and bury the garbage.
挖一个坑把垃圾埋掉。
rubbish的词性比garbage要多一些，它除了可以当名词之外，还可以作为动词，意思是“强烈地批评，把什么东西或想法说成一文不值”。
例如：
I don't understand why everyone keeps rubbishing my idea?
我不明白为什么每个人都觉得我的想法一文不值？
rubbish作为形容词，意思就是“不会，没有能力做某件事情”。
例句：
I'm rubbish at playing computer games.
我对电子游戏一窍不通。
My best friend is a rubbish singer.
我的好朋友根本就不会唱歌。
trash
trash也是美式英语垃圾的意思，还可以用来指“不值得尊重的人”，是非正式用语。
例如：
I don’t believe my brother dated Joanna, she’s trash.
我真不敢相信我的哥哥竟然曾经和乔安娜交往过，她简直就是垃圾。
当trash被作为动词使用的时候，是非正式用语，表示“扔弃、丢弃”或者“严重损坏、拆毁”或者“猛烈批评”。
例如：
I try to trash all junk mail as soon as I receive it.
我准备一收到垃圾邮件就马上扔掉。

waste
waste作为名词的时候，它是一个正式用语，最常用的意思是“没有利用价值的东西，包括废品、垃圾、废物、废料”或者指“时间、金钱、精力等的浪费”。
例如：
The amount of waste we produce in the house every year is astonishing.
我们一家一年所产生的垃圾简直令人不可思议。
Don’t watch this film. It’s a complete waste of time.
千万别看这部电影，这会是浪费时间。
waste作为动词时的常用意思是“因为没有合理应用而造成浪费”。
例如：
I don’t want to waste my time on this.
我不想为这事儿浪费我的时间。
You are wasting a lot of water by having a bath instead of a shower.
你泡浴缸会比洗淋浴浪费很多水。
